Sex.com域名的拥有者为Escom LLC，它是一家洛杉基公司，2006年时它贷款买下此域名，不过却无法偿还贷款。本来，由于丧失抵押品赎回权，域名连同网站将在今年3月拍卖，但债权人觉得这笔资产能获得列高的价格。因此，域名将由德国域名管理公司Sedo拿来出售，该公司称已经有数个买家有兴趣购买。
4年前，Sex.com交易价已达到1400万美元，成为全球最贵的域名，在流产的3月拍卖中，它的起拍价定为100万美元。
Sedo首席销售官Liesbeth Mack-de Boer说：“很难说它将以何价格出售，因为没有其它域名卖到这高的价钱。但从整个域名市场的价格来看，过去4-5年价格翻倍。”Sedo公司出售的域名中，最高的是300万美元，该域名为vodka.com。
据报道，Sex.com网站通过广告，每天为所有者带来1.5万美元的收入，可见该域名的价值非同一般。不过，它的价值可能衰落，因为人们通过Google之类的搜索寻找内容，而不是在地址栏中输入域名。因此，拥有一个简短易记的域名似乎不再像过去那么重要。另外，由于成人域名.xxx的启用，它的价值也会受到冲击。上周，ICANN已经通过了XXX域名的核准。
1994年，一名叫Gary Kremen的人注册一Sex.com，他曾创建match.com网站。随后几年，一名叫Stephen Cohen的人宣称自己拥有域名权，于是双方发生诉讼，最终于2006年解决争端，Gary Kremen成为所有者，并获得6500万美元的损失赔偿。
